Sochi Pictures from space
While the most famous photographers shoot what is happening at the Olympics, I suggest you take a look at the pictures of Sochi from space that were made by January 4, 2014. The resort is situated in a valley in the center and the ski runs are open on shaded slopes on the left side of the valley. Height exaggerated in 1, 5 times to show topographical details.
NASA's Terra satellite using its Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), to capture the views of Sochi from space. In the pictures, the red shades indicate vegetation, while the white areas show snow. Buildings look gray, sea - dark blue.
Terra satellite was launched in December 1999 and contains five sensitive instruments for Earth observation from space.
Meanwhile, astronauts in space will be watching the Winter Olympics to the International Space Station (ISS). Recall the station are now two American astronauts, Japanese astronaut and three Russian cosmonauts.
Olympic torch for the Olympics in Sochi has been launched to the space station last fall. Astronauts took the Olympic torch and went with him into space before returning to Earth in November. Sochi Olympics will run from 7 to 23 February.
