Iceland is going to use the new high-temperature wells for energy

Iceland for many of us know, first of all, the fact that they are actively used geothermal energy. Icelanders not only heat their homes warm the planet and get a relatively inexpensive energy for the needs of his country, but also plan to deliver a surplus of energy in the EU countries.

And to improve the efficiency of its geothermal power plants Icelanders are now conducting experiments to work with high-temperature wells (their depth is more than a mile). And more or less podronaya information on this project began to appear just now, despite the fact that the tests are carried out for several years.

Typically, the Icelandic system work with temperatures of 40-150 degrees Celsius, but not so long ago, it was decided to drill deep wells to reach the layer of liquid magma. Actually, in Iceland do this simply because this region - one of the most active in the world in terms of volcanic activity (the point is that the island расположен on the crest of the North Atlantic global tectonic suture , along which the divergence of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates).

His first well drilled in the project Deep Drilling Project (IDDP), reached its goal at a depth of about 2 kilometers (1, 3 miles). Thus, it was possible to bring the temperature of the steam up to 450 degrees Celsius, which increases the efficiency of geothermal power plants. Actually, all this was done back in 2010, and two years working for the Icelanders drilled well with high temperature steam, until the closing of wells in service in 2012. Now the goal of the project participants - to work with the well again, or a new drill.

All this was and is a pilot project that can be called very successful, because now there are all prerequisites in order to use the energy of the subsoil in volcanically active regions much more efficiently than was possible until recently.
