Reasons why Ukrainians return home
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Ukrainian women and children have been forced to leave their homes. They escaped from shells that destroy Ukrainian cities. Men of military age remained to defend their country from the aggressor. For many Ukrainian men who were abroad at the start of the war, returning to Ukraine was a matter of honor. Thousands of Ukrainian men voluntarily returned to Ukraine, took up arms and defended their land. Among them are professional fighters, and those who have never held a gun in their hands.
Millions of Ukrainian civilians are forced to seek asylum in EU countries. In the early days of the war, people fled in panic from the bombing, having managed to grab a child and a passport, not knowing what awaited them. At train evacuation stations, people threw suitcases and sometimes pets because there was not enough space on the trains. To get to safety, you had to stand at the border for days without food. Not everyone was able to leave: someone has old parents, someone lives in relatively peaceful regions, someone does not want to leave their home and tries to help everyone who needs it in this difficult time.
The military urged the civilian population to evacuate so that people would not suffer and the Ukrainian army could defend its borders. It would be easier for the military, since they would not worry about their wives, mothers and children, but could focus on the defense of Ukraine. Only a month after the outbreak of hostilities, people who left for other countries began to return home. What's the reason? The war is not over and the house is still unsafe. No one knows what will happen next.
In peacetime, everyone dreams of traveling, only evacuation to a foreign country, where there are no relatives and acquaintances, where people communicate in another language, is not a journey, but torture. Many have moved to another country and rebuked themselves for being safe when other Ukrainians are in danger.
The West has taken in about 11 million Ukrainians who fled the war. People organize help points, offer warm food and accommodation. The main thing is that rockets do not fly overhead. But many have relatives at home, and the experiences have not gone away. Therefore, it is better to be close to a loved one in troubled times than to lose him, being hundreds of kilometers away without the opportunity to say goodbye.
After 40 days of confronting the aggressor, people still go abroad. But now the statistics are changing. Surprisingly, more people are returning to Ukraine than leaving. Many people know that no one is waiting for them abroad. No one expected so many refugees in Europe, this is a humanitarian crisis. After all, people leave without means of subsistence, they need not only food and clothing, but also shelter and material support. Large cities in Poland stop accepting refugees because there is no place in the country. Poland, as a good neighbor, gave asylum to more than 3 million Ukrainians.
In many countries, there are laws under which refugees cannot get a job for a while. People must obtain official refugee status and only after a few months or years can study and work. Until then, they receive minimum payments. Even countries with good economies are terrified of how to handle so many people. Many simplify the rules of crossing the border, make changes to the legislation to help Ukrainians. But the resources and the capabilities of different countries are limited, with all the desire to help. The world has not seen such a humanitarian catastrophe since World War II.
The desire to help compatriots Ukrainians are an incredibly united people. When the war came, entrepreneurs, stars, ordinary residents became volunteers and joined the ranks of territorial defense. They prepare food for fighters, collect humanitarian aid, provide psychological support to people who came from hot spots, help abandoned pets.
Actor from the Dnieper Alexei Surovtsev saves pets in Irpen, risking his life. And Dasha Astafieva rolled up her sleeves and began peeling potatoes for the military. Andrey Khlyvnyuk, Oleg Fagot, the group “Antibodies”, Yuri Tkach and other famous singers stood up to defend their country in the ranks of the thermodefense.
The courage and courage of Ukrainians inspires peaceful people so much that they want to join in defending the country, to support people in word and deed. So, the return to Ukraine becomes obvious. Among these people was a hairdresser Tatiana, who left her city when a shell hit a neighboring house.
Now the woman decided to return home: Despite the fact that the village in Moldova is incredibly beautiful, people are very responsive, I could not stand the fact that my guys stayed there. When they started asking if I was in Ukraine, it became clear that I had to go back. It’s springtime and girls want to be beautiful. A good haircut makes you smile. Now, in addition to the alarming suitcase, I packed a suitcase with my favorite tools just in case. And sleeps here under the howl of sirens and explosions calmer than in another country, — does not hold back tears Tatiana.
Many Ukrainians feel guilty for not helping the military, this explains their return to Ukraine. But the civilian population is the rear, and if you have a job, a home, and your region is relatively peaceful, keep doing what you did before the war. This is your contribution to supporting your country. It makes more sense to stay at home and work remotely, improving the economy of the state, than to stand on the front lines without military experience. No one will sacrifice people, everyone must stay in his place and not lose heart. Faith in victory and faith in people, cohesion and support are very important for each of us.
