Is it true that in the Soviet canteens there was high-quality and tasty food, and schoolchildren were always full and satisfied?

You think free school meals Must be mandatory and only from the best products? How was it before, under Soviet rule? Well, let's talk about it a little. It turns out that many citizens believe that throughout the history of the USSR canteens in school gave the maximum quality food for students, or at least they remember it so.

In fact, reality was a little different. Bregs did not consist of only jelly and milk rivers were not observed. But nostalgia is doing its job and a large number of people of the older generation will gladly indulge in memories of the “delicious” dishes from the school buffet, which are “two heads” higher and better than “modern slops”. Well, let's go in order.

First of all, it should be noted that for all 70 years the union has never had one gastronomic standard. Obviously, the country was too big, and the production in the regions could be very different. Not surprisingly, the school canteens were not the same, but, by the way, they tried to somehow replace.

In short, at the dawn of the Soviet era, everything was quite difficult. At that time, students could not even dream of hot food in the walls of the school. The same thing happened in kindergartens. And with the advent of collective farms, it became difficult for many parents to have time to work in the field and take care of their children.

The situation improved slightly only after a while. In the era of late union, a kitchen with a basic menu begins to appear in schools and it becomes a little easier for students. However, much depended on where the educational institution was located and whether any enterprise or state farm took care of it.

So, in the 60-70s, the possibility of hot lunches begins to appear in schools. There is no menu set up. But don’t be too happy: only 50% of kids can take advantage of this opportunity. The rest have to bring lunches from home. The power's not there yet.

Only in 1987 appeared “Collection of recipes for food for schoolchildren”. More than 30 specialists of their time worked on its creation and educational institutions were guided by it. And some people still use his commandments. Since then, technology has stepped far ahead and an ordinary modern schoolboy would surely be surprised now by the soup or brine of that time.

Everything was eaten to the last crumb and with pleasure As you know, the union of citizens to some extent tried to impersonalize. Soviet people should not stand out from behind the backs of others. Don't do that. The same was true for students. The menu was for everyone and everyone. It had to be used in silence and without questions. Intolerance to certain products was considered a problem of the individual student.

For example, many of us are lactose intolerant. And someone, in general, can drink milk, but not boiled and without this disgusting film on top of the glass. And before, it was overlooked. Eat all you want. The student must leave behind an empty plate and do so without sound. But the barracks will officially come into his life only in 10 years.

That is why the opportunity to buy individual products in the school cafeteria later caused such a furor. Despite the lack of funds, many students agreed to save up to eat what they really liked once a week.

Everything is good, everything is true. Products for sale were really made according to GOSTs and such were received for sale. Some people like to challenge their quality so far, but we probably won’t. At that time, they had their own standards and adhered to them. How good they are by modern standards is not up to us.

But! The fact is that even the most high-quality products in the past could come to school canteens already with sweetness, or even with rot. Sadly, it's true. Ingredients for soups and second courses were often not very fresh, so many schoolchildren complained about the quality and taste of dishes. Porridge with bitterness, all the same milk is a little sour, dried fruits.

GettyImages But let's put the negativity aside. There's been a lot of stuff in the past. A person prefers to remember childhood and youth only with a smile, no matter what events then occurred. This is probably why human nature is what it is. The problems of fathers and children, different views on the same problems. Readers will have different, even polar, opinions on the subject. Well, that's good. As the old saying goes, “Truth is born in dispute.”
