Should I read a Russian classic with a child?

Every year people read less and less. The older generation, who grew up in an era without the Internet, continues to revel in books. Every new one prefers movies and music over literature.

Why this happens, tried to understand and Russian journalist Alexander Nevzorov in his work “Russian literature has expired expiration date”.

We hear the cries of officials, Black Hundreds and philological ladies – they are very sorry that children do not read.

“No one asked, what do these children actually read? Classic? Why should I read it? Why use a product that has clearly expired? Why doesn’t anyone want to call a spade a spade? ?

“Dostoevsky’s God-seeking hysteria has the same relation to today as Sumerian clay tablets. Tolstoy’s pathetic, torturous, verbose fantasy about the war of 1812 also outlived its usefulness. In this genre there were samples and more interesting. The topic of long-term pre-coupling torment of females in crinolines is also not of particular interest today.”

“Of course, there are some of the most influential examples of culture. In Tolkien's trilogy contemporary literature It was boiled like a pot. But Tolkien is not much of a propagandist because everyone is afraid of a simple and obvious analogy with Mordor.

“What is spirituality today? Spirituality is not knowledge of astronomy, astrophysics and literature, it is complete ignorance of molecular biology, physiology, structural geology.

Once Russian literature was very relevant, which makes it especially meaningless today, because the linguistic and worldview picture of the world has completely changed. All Russian literature has a distinct, obsessive, great-power overtones with the cult of soldiers. Does this at least have an educational effect? It's zero. This is particularly evident today.”

“Children refuse to read, and they are right about that, and we need to help them do that. The truth speaks through the mouth of a child. Don't make children read. Admittedly, they have nothing to read.”

Nevzorov is right in his own way. But there is one thing we will allow ourselves to disagree with. Literature as a source of inspiration is invaluable. Another thing is that her choice should be approached selectively.

Benefits of Literature This is the aftertaste it leaves to the reader. If you don’t, the book is probably bad. Or the reader is too big a gourmet.

Perhaps what our grandparents got only from books, the modern generation learned to draw from other sources. That’s why I read a lot less now...

What do you think? What's the reason?
