Shimon Peres This man in his life has become a legend. His political career spanned more than 70 years: a longtime Knesset member, twice Prime Minister of Israel, a minister in 12 cabinets, the author of 11 books and a huge number of publications on the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. When he was 84, he became president of Israel and the oldest sitting head of state. Let us remember the life of this great man.
Shimon Peres was born on August 2, 1923 in the small Polish town of Vishnevo, now belonging to the territory of Belarus, in a simple Jewish family. His father was a lumber buyer, and his mother was a Russian teacher at school. A great influence on the life of the boy was his maternal grandfather, Rabbi Hirsch Melzer. Grandfather, according to Shimon, was a storehouse of wisdom for him, it was he who instilled in the boy a love for poetry.
In 1931, Shimon’s father had the opportunity to emigrate to Palestine. Two years later, having saved up money and feeling that he was standing on his feet, he summoned his wife and children. All of Peres' relatives (including Hirsch Malzer) who remained in the town died in 1941. Then the Nazis drove all the Jews of Vishnevo into the synagogue and set it on fire.
In Tel Aviv, Shimon graduated from elementary and secondary schools, and then studied at the labor school of the agricultural settlement of Ben Shemen. It was there that he met his future wife, Sonia Gelman, in 1945. After graduation, Shimon worked as a farmer for several years. He could have become an agronomist or a veterinarian, but fate decreed otherwise.
Shimon began his political career at the age of 18, becoming secretary of a youth organization. Over time, an active and brisk young man noticed David Ben-Gurion, who became the political father of Shimon. At a time when the country was struggling for independence, Ben-Gurion singled out Peres among other politicians and promoted him.
In 1953, Shimon became the youngest Director General of the Ministry of Defense at just 29. At that time, he managed to do a lot for the country: he established a dialogue with Europe and agreed on the supply of fighter jets, and was one of the first who was able to establish in Israel the production of its own weapons. Peres was engaged in the defense sector for about ten years and achieved much.
Take the Entebbe operation to free Israeli citizens captured by terrorists at Ugandan airport. This operation was an example of the Israeli government taking care of its citizens anywhere in the world.
During his life and long political career, Peres managed to work in almost all senior positions in the government. He has served twice as Prime Minister, twice as Acting Prime Minister and once as President.
Perez was criticized by many for his controversial reputation. At the beginning of his political career, he put a lot of effort into creating a worthy weapon for war, but since then he has repeatedly made attempts to reconcile with the Palestinians and the Arabs in general. Not everyone agreed with this policy.
Often the circumstances were not in his favor, but he did not give up and moved on. Even after the coup and the loss of power, he did not give up and began to slowly rebuild his party. It was a long road, but he managed to come to power and implement what he planned. Perez has shown himself to be a tireless and dynamic leader, proving that he can solve the most painful problems.
Even people of opposing beliefs recognized Peres as an excellent head of government. He was perhaps the best head of state in Israel’s history. During his time in power, he did more for the country than any ruler before him. Although he did not always receive gratitude in return, he managed to maintain his optimism.
He said, “I am an optimist or a pessimist.” My answer is that optimists and pessimists die the same and live differently. And if I have something to offer people, I would suggest living as an optimist. Don’t be pessimistic: it’s a waste of time, especially when times change.”
In the 90s, as foreign minister, Peres held secret talks with Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Then they managed to make peace. In 1994, Peres, Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin received the Nobel Peace Prize for resolving the conflict. At the same time, Peres tried to make peace with Jordan, but this did not happen, and in 1995 new explosions and another escalation began.
Shimon Peres elected president of Israel In 2007, when he was 84 years old. He became the world’s oldest political leader since he turned 90 in 2013. All his life he was a great optimist and dreamer, proving it more than once. Perhaps it was the belief in the dream and the constant desire for it that helped him live such a long and rich life.
He said, The potential of all people is great. But they're all a little lazy. If you want to achieve something, you have to work. Nothing falls from the sky. We worked very hard in Israel. What's wrong with that? I don't know. He was devoted to his work and called vacation a waste of time. Perez admitted that he had never been on vacation in 90 years. He loved his work with all his heart and enjoyed it.

More than thirty years Peres spent on climbing to the political top. He had to endure fierce battles even in his own party. This struggle made him better and hardened, he became invulnerable to various attacks and insults. In critical situations, he always showed an excellent ability to control himself and not give vent to emotions. Supporters of Peres admired his determination and activity even in old age.
Perez himself said, People ask me how to stay active. It's very simple. Consider your achievements and dreams in your mind. If you have more dreams than achievements, you are still young. On the contrary, you are old.”
He is a man who can truly be admired. He proved that the goal can be achieved at any age. He taught you to dream and never give up, be active, optimistic, and keep doing what you love!
We love to tell you inspiring stories of people who are loyal to their profession and active despite their age. For example, the story of Alla Levushkina, the oldest surgeon in Russia, who is still operating at 91.
We are also very inspired by the story of Barbara Beskind, who managed to fulfill her girlly dream and at the age of 90 comes up with ideas for inventions no worse than young specialists.
