The whole Orthodox world knows Xenia of Petersburg. Her main feat is the voluntary renunciation of worldly goods and a comfortable life after great grief. Who is this woman and what do we know about her?
Saint Xenia was born between 1719 and 1730. Upon reaching adulthood, she married the court singer Colonel Andrei Petrov. However, their happiness was short-lived, Xenia’s husband died when she was only 26 years old. Sudden grief struck Xenia so much that she decided to abandon all joys and worldly pleasures.
Xenia undertook a heavy feat of foolishness: she seemed crazy to everyone, especially relatives and friends, but this she tried to pray for the sins of her husband and devote herself to the spiritual world. Soon the future saint gave away all her possessions, gave the house to her good friend and went on wanderings.
Dressed in the robes of her husband (laundry, caftan and kamzol), she began to assure everyone that her husband was not dying at all, he was alive, and his wife Ksenia Grigorievna went to God. Soon she stopped responding to her name at all, but always answered when she was called Andrei Fedorovich.
Being homeless, the woman wandered the streets all day, mainly in the area of Matthew Church. People at first mocked Xenia for her country of dress and incomprehensible speeches, but soon got used to it. Seeing that the woman lives on the street, they brought her clothes, money and food, but she refused everything. She took only coins with the image of the rider and distributed them to the poor.
For a long time, no one knew where she was sleeping. Over time, not only residents of the city, but also the local police became interested in this. After following her, they found out that every night, despite the weather and season, Xenia went to the field and in prayer stood on her knees until the morning.
Saint Xenia sometimes came to visit friends, and people began to notice that after that in those houses there is a happy event. If she bought something from a shop, then there was a trade. People began to notice this and tried to somehow help Xenia to get a piece of her blessing.
For patience and feat, the Lord gave Xenia the gift of insight into the future. One day she went to her friend Paraskeva, who was barren, and told her to go to the cemetery, saying that the Lord sends her a son. Paraskeva was surprised, but listened and went to the specified place. Right before her eyes, a young pregnant woman was hit by a cab driver’s horse and, having given birth to a child, died. After that, Paraskeva took the boy to her upbringing.
Before Christmas 1762, Saint Xenia walked around St. Petersburg, urging everyone to bake pancakes. She said, “Bake pancakes, tomorrow all Russia will bake pancakes.” The next day, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna departed to God.
In the seventy-first year of her life, the saint died. She was buried in the Smolensk cemetery, where during her lifetime she helped build a church. Even after the death of Xenia, miracles did not stop. People began to walk to her grave, asking for help, healing and other blessings. Over time, a chapel with an oak iconostasis appeared in that place, people still flock to it.
