Being from a noble pagan family, Barbara grew up very well educated and educated. Her mother died when the girl was little, and her father, wanting to protect her daughter, imprisoned her in the tower from prying eyes. Only teachers and servants were allowed to enter these choirs.

But from an early age, Varvara was interested in questions about the creation of the world. Watching what was happening around her, she knew God through the contemplation of nature. But many more questions remained unanswered.

When rich suitors came to the girl with requests for marriage, she refused everything. My father knew it was his fault. He feared that because of the introverted life, his daughter would not be able to build a relationship, and allowed Varvara to go outside.

In the city of Barbara, she met young people who told her about Christ and His saving power. These sermons instilled deep faith in the girl’s heart. She found answers to questions about the universe that she asked herself every day and wished to accept the Sacrament of Baptism.

With bright thoughts, Barbara went to her father and told him about Christ, the power of the Lord and the Triune God. But the father was angry and did not side with his daughter. He urged her to give up her faith, but the girl did not agree and ran away from home. Having forcibly returned his daughter to the palace, his father brutally beat Barbara and handed it over to the ruler of the city.

The ordeal of the Barbarians did not end there. She was brutally tortured and starved, led around the city, subjected to beatings and abuse. But the girl continued to pray to the Lord and did not doubt her faith. The Savior himself came to her in prison and healed her wounds. Here is how the church tradition writes about it:

“Take courage, my bride, and do not be afraid, for I am with you, I protect you, I look to your exploits and alleviate your illnesses.” For your sufferings I am preparing you in My heavenly palace an eternal reward, so endure to the end, that you may soon enjoy eternal blessings in My kingdom.
