Detailed food calendar for all 48 days of Lent

The subject of our new article: Great Lent - 2021: meals by day. We chose today for a reason, because on March 15, the strictest and longest fast in the Orthodox Church begins. In order for your path of spiritual purification to go smoothly, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the current menu for the next 7 weeks.



Great Lent 2021: meals by day First of all we want to remind you of the main rules of the church charter. Stick to them throughout Fortycost (40 days of fasting) and Holy Week (7 days before Easter).

The first and last weeks of Lent are considered the most severe. It shouldn't be on your menu. No product of animal origin. On weekdays you can eat only 1 time a day - in the evening. Lunch and dinner are allowed on weekends.



On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, you should only eat cold food without oil. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, a hot meal without butter. Saturday and Sunday It is allowed to add vegetable oil to hot dishes.

It is worth noting that these strict rules apply to the monastic charter. However, laymen (not monks) fast much softer. You need to know if this food is right for you. Therefore, first of all, focus on your health and the advice of your priest.

First week
  1. March 15th. On this day you need to completely abandon meals.
  2. March 16th. Dry eating day. Uncooked food of plant origin is allowed. For example, bread, raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, honey, dried fruits, water and salt.
  3. March 17th. Dry eating day.
  4. March 18th. Dry eating day.
  5. March 19th. Dry eating day.
  6. March 20th. On this day you can eat boiled vegetable food with oil. For example, porridge, soups, stewed vegetables and mushrooms.
  7. March 21. Same diet as Saturday.

Second week
  1. March 22. Uncooked food of plant origin is allowed. For example, bread, raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, honey, dried fruits, water and salt.
  2. March 23rd. On this day, hot food is allowed without adding oil: porridge, soups, stewed vegetables, mushrooms.
  3. March 24th. Dry eating day.
  4. March 25th. Hot food day without butter.
  5. March 26th. Dry eating day.
  6. March 27th. Hot butter day. March 27 is also parental Saturday. On how to spend this day, read our article.
  7. March 28th. Hot dishes with vegetable oil are allowed.




Third week
  1. March 29th. Dry eating day.
  2. March 30th. A day of hot food without vegetable oil.
  3. March 31. Dry eating day.
  4. April 1st. You can prepare cereals, soups, stewed vegetables or mushrooms, but without oil.
  5. April 2nd. Dry eating day.
  6. April 3rd. Hot food day with added oil, as well as Parental Saturday.
  7. April 4th. A day of hot dishes to which you can add oil.




Week four
  1. April 5th. Dry eating day.
  2. April 6th. Add to the diet hot food without vegetable oil.
  3. April 7th. This is the day of the Holy Spirit. In honor of the holiday, fish can be included in the diet, although this environment is considered a dry-eating day.
  4. April 8th. On this day you can eat any porridge, lean soup, stewed vegetables or mushrooms.
  5. April 9th. Dry eating day.
  6. April 10th. Parent Saturday. Prepare porridge, soup, mushrooms or vegetables with the addition of vegetable oil.
  7. April 11th. Hot butter day.




Week five
  1. April 12th. Dry eating day.
  2. April 13th. Hot cereals, soups, vegetables and mushrooms without oil are allowed.
  3. April 14th. Dry eating day.
  4. April 15th. A day of hot food without adding vegetable oil.
  5. April 16th. Dry eating day.
  6. April 17th. Porridges, soups, stewed mushrooms or vegetables with the addition of vegetable oil are allowed.
  7. April 18th. Hot butter day.




Sixth week
  1. April 19th. Day of uncooked food of plant origin.
  2. April 20th. Hot meals day without butter.
  3. April 21st. Dry eating day.
  4. April 22nd. A day of hot food without adding vegetable oil.
  5. April 23rd. Dry eating day.
  6. April 24th. On this day Lazarev Saturday is celebrated. To various porridges, soups, stewed mushrooms or vegetables, you can add not only oil, but also fish caviar.
  7. April 25th. Palm Sunday. On this day, fish and seafood dishes are allowed as an exception.




Seventh Week - Holy Week
  1. April 26th. Dry eating day.
  2. April 27th. Dry eating day.
  3. April 28th. Dry eating day.
  4. April 29th. You can cook hot dishes with the addition of oil.
  5. Good Friday, April 30. On this day, you need to completely abandon food.
  6. May 1st. On the last day of fasting, hot food without oil is allowed.


If you observe the strictest fast, then throughout Holy Week you need to adhere to dry eating. In 2021. Resurrection of Christ falls on May 2. On this day, any restrictions on food are removed. However, this does not mean that you should immediately jump on meat and dairy products. Experts recommend returning your usual diet gradually.
