Modern insulation for the attic rest compared to the grandfather method
To paraphrase the classic proverb, we can safely say: heat is not where often drowned, but where well insulated! Every experienced owner will say that this is the first case. Otherwise, there will be a lot of wood and little use. The subject of this article became loft insulation.
I should probably make a reservation. It will be more about the method of insulation. It was used by our grandfathers, and there is, as they say, something to compare. It's all about one house. Enjoy it, editor. "Site" I am happy to share the experience of practical and active people.
They have an old house in the village, logged. Probably a hundred years old. Previous owners lived only on one half of it, the other was empty, because according to the classics there should be household. But they decided to make them residential, which means that they need to insulate. It's warmed, of course, the whole house.

As usual, put basalt wool, according to all the rules, with a membrane, and outside siding. Honestly, after these transformations, a completely modern home. You'll never say it's wooden. But not the point. When it was time to clean the ceiling, I thought.
Their roof is simple, inhabited by a galvanized iron sheet, which is on a simple frame of poles. Summer means heat, winter oak. Classic genre. Good thing it's dry. They decided not to mess with the roof because what would you do with it? But improperly insulated ceiling will be the weak link, the house will lose heat.
We looked at the old part, and there was something incomprehensible. In general, they also decided not to touch, but they decided to do it in a modern way over that economic half. In the rooms themselves, the ceiling was laid with a polymer film and closed with a wagon, and on top, in the attic, the same basalt wool was placed ten centimeters.
Then the attic boards on top, that's all. In fact, what else is needed? It seemed to be good at first, but over time they noticed that in the old half the heat is kept and the boiler is enough on a single, but in the new one it is still cool. The boiler should be put on two. And in the old part immediately Tashkent.
As they say, life itself gave an opportunity to compare. How they used to warm up and what happens now. The first thing to suspect was the cat: everything goes, looks at the ceiling and yells. Naturally, they decided to check what was there. We're not too lazy to take the boards off again. So what? Mouse farm In this wool, the cloud of them multiplied!
And the wool itself "sank." Thought to throw out the usual glass wool, but, as it turned out, it does not scare mice, they also enjoy living in it. In general, we decided to dig out the heater, which is on the old half. He's lying there like nothing happened, the rooms are warm, and there are no mice.
The ancestors in this regard acted clearly and simply. They found there a layer of clay dust mixed with chopped straw, lime and droppings, apparently bird. Everything is as dry as chips. Under this layer is another, from the earth, and under the ground is the same, from clay. And there are ceiling boards. Here's the heater!
Became interested in the neighbors, who loft Insulated. Some say that we have clay with kzyak and straw. Why? Our walls were so smeared. Others say they have a layer of needles and clay too. Clay, they say, the boards are completely smeared. When they expanded the roof, removed the layer, boards under the clay as new.
From other regions report that they use sawdust, but do not put clean, because mice can also start. If it's clay, it'll last forever. Someone's pouring the ground. Mixed with dry autumn leaf and lime. They say that it keeps warm well, and when you start to heat the stove, such smell appears. Probably because of the leaves.
In general, they collected some straw for the summer, dragged with clay and smeared in several layers. And fine, they say. There was also a spruce added to make it smell a little bit. Why didn't they do that before? Who knows? We always think we are smarter than our ancestors. And here it is: through the years we are taught.
Not all the gold that shines! Again, we see that modern solutions do not always justify themselves. Maybe it's the hands that don't grow from there. One way or another, but to abandon the way that grandfathers used is somewhat rash. Especially in old wooden houses.
Attic insulation It can be very different, but if it is an old house, it is logical to use natural materials. Even if they don’t seem to be good for anything.
