Technology of production of tires of grass

A group of researchers from the University of Minnesota, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Center for sustainable polymers, funded by the National science Foundation, invented the technology of production of tires from biomass of wood and grass.

Ordinary car tyres are considered to be ecologically harmful because they are mostly made from fossil fuels. Tires made from biomass will have characteristics identical to the existing car tires.

The new technology patented by the University and available for licensing through the marketing Department. The study is published the leading publication of the American chemical society journal ACS Catalysis.

— We managed to develop a chemical process for obtaining isoprene, a key molecule in the material of the tires from natural products, such as wood, grass or corn silage, said Floor, Dauenhauer, associate Professor of chemical engineering and materials science University of Minnesota.

The first stage of the new process is a fermentation of sugars derived from biomass to intermediate product: itaconic acid. In the second stage, itaconic acid reacts with hydrogen to form a substance called methyltetrahydrofuran. The research team identified a unique combination of metal-to-metal, which serves as a highly efficient catalyst of the process. In the third stage, methyl-THF is dehydrated to isoprene. published
