Underwater energy storage system

Saving the received energy for later use is an extremely promising industry for the development of the power industry. One of the simplest methods is the storage of energy by pumping into the reservoir located above the turbine generator, normal water. The liquid is pumped during peak low energy consumption and is pumped with increasing needs for electricity. But recently, experts from the Institute for wind energy and energy systems Fraunhofer has modified this technology and has successfully completed a series of tests.

In the development of German scientists reservoirs, representing a sphere with a diameter of 30 meters, are not on the surface of the water and sink to the bottom of the reservoir together with the turbine electric generator. Excess energy in the system is used for pumping water from the sphere, but in the moments of filling out the sphere is an accumulation of energy derived from the rotation of the turbine generator. Such a sphere when immersed to a depth of 700 meters with a turbine capacity of 5 MW can accumulate energy up to 20 MW/h Process complete filling the tank takes about 4 hours.

New technology can perfectly complement the existing wind farm located in the open sea. Through a series of tests, scientists have produced a miniature replica of the tank with a diameter of 3 meters with turbine on Board and placed it at a depth of 100 meters in the waters of lake Constance, which has another name — lake Constance. During the experiment the technology is proven, and the data obtained will be used further in developing full-scale project of the submarine power plant. Although development is only at an early stage, it has already attracted the attention of investors from the energy sector, and the Ministry of Economics and technology of Germany even financially supported the start of research. published
