Available device on the Peltier element to create water from air
Water scarcity is a growing problem worldwide. Climate change is spreading these challenges to more and more territories. Water scarcity is often most felt in countries where there is an excess of sunlight. But what if we could turn heat into an advantage and learn to take advantage of it as a continuous source of drinking water? Dutch company SunGlacier has created a cheap solar-powered technology that uses condensation to literally create water from the air.
The device, called DC03 SunGlacier, uses a low-cost, 18-watt Peltier cell to slowly create water - about half a glass every 6 hours. And while that may seem like a lot, the DC03 has a lot of nice bonuses like no moving parts and doesn’t need a battery or inverter to start. Its duration depends only on a small solar panel with a capacity of 30 to 50 watts of solar panel. And usually high-quality photo panels can last for decades and need to be replaced. The device has a built-in step-down converter that adjusts the voltage of the Peltier element in a safe range of 12 volts.
The DC03 is the most efficient when working in warm air and works thanks to the Peltier element, which costs $3 and is a small electronic part that has the ability of thermoelectric cooling. When an electric current passes through it, one side heats up and the other becomes cold. This temperature difference – which reaches a maximum of 67 degrees Celsius – will cause the moisture contained in the air to condense. Condensate forms on the outer surface of the aluminum cone, which is connected to the cooler side of the element, thus creating water droplets that can be collected.
According to SunGlacier director and artist Ep Verheggen, the design has been tested but not optimized. That is why the company has published information about the design for free online, encouraging the public to share their improvements and drawings.
According to recent estimates, more than 4 billion people worldwide face acute water shortages. Perhaps the DC03 SunGlacier open source project will help people to help those who need it. published
