Prices on batteries for electric cars fell by 80% in 6 years to $227 per kWh - Tesla promises less than $190
As for any other cars, the profitability of production of electric cars is a very important aspect. And if humanity is really committed to electric vehicles dominated by cars with internal combustion engines, their mass production should bring significant benefits.
A new study recently published by McKinsey & Company shows how the process of "leading market for the electric" dependent on industry panels. According to the findings of American analysts, the cost of batteries will be considerably lowered and, consequently, will increase the profit of automakers, only between 2025 — 2030.
This is despite the fact that the cost of batteries for electric vehicles fell from $1,000 per kWh in 2010 to $227 per kWh in 2016.
"Despite this decline, the cost of batteries continue to make electric cars more expensive than similar options with the engine. The current forecast – the price of the battery pack is below $190/kWh by 2020, and decrease to below $100/kWh by 2030", — reported in the McKinsey document. Here you need to keep in mind that we are talking about the cost of that is battery pack, not on the cost of individual elements that are often confused. Of course, producers are able to anticipate this price trend will be able to make their products more cost-effective earlier.
Among these companies – Tesla. While McKinsey expects the cost reduction to $190/kWh by the end of the decade, Tesla promises to overcome the price threshold in the current year. Thus, the company expects to achieve a 30% margin from the sale of its flagship sedan Model S.
Tesla plans also included reducing the cost of batteries by 30% with the release available Model 3, which will use the batteries 2170. We will remind, at the end of last year, Tesla has already started the production of these energy storage on Gigabit in Nevada.
A new battery will put a price of about $35 thousand for an electric car with a mileage of more than 320 km, however, as experts believe McKinsey, for full competition with petrol cars need the price of batteries is not more than $100/kWh (excluding state subsidies).
This forecast is consistent with the future vision of the industry most manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries, but Tesla in this case is set to a shorter time frame. So the CEO of the company Elon Musk has previously stated that to be the price of a $100 kWh will be possible by 2020, by increasing the scale of production, and, honey, thanks Gigabit. published
