The history of Thai massage

History of traditional Thai massage is inextricably linked with the history of the Thai people. Throughout its history, Thailand has experienced many cultural influences from their neighbours, and Thai medicine could not experience the effects of these rich cultures.

One of the determined life of Siam (the ancient name of Thailand) event was the spread of Buddhism penetrated there from India through Southeast Asia. This happened about 2500 years ago. Along with the Buddhist monks from India came and doctors, practitioners of Ayurveda, yoga and knowledge brought. The practice, formed in the merger of the endemic Thai medicine and Ayurveda, and formed the basis of the modern Thai system of healing that includes herbal treatments and herbal preparations, traditional Thai massage, Thai yoga, aromatic saunas and application of hot herbal compresses. To date, Thai medicine remained such exotic practices as "Tok sen" — the tapping with a hammer with a wooden stick energy channels and massage the feet (in front of which the therapist, holding the rope, dip the foot in a herbal infusion and then warms them by touching the hot metal sheet).

The founder of Thai massage believe Indian doctor by the name of Jiva Kumar Bhikku, also known as Jiva Komarpaj, or as it is affectionately called the Thais, "Dr. Shivaka", "Doctor-father." He is known as the friend and personal doctor of the Buddha. And today, every Thai massage therapist before you start reading a mantra devoted to "Doctor-father".

In the early days were practically no records describing techniques of Thai massage, all information was transmitted orally from generation to generation. Rare writings on the energy lines and therapies, along with the sacred Buddhist texts were kept in the ancient capital of Siam Ayuthaya. In 1776, the year the Burmese attacked Siam. The capital was looted, most of the lyrics were killed. In 1832, the year king Rama III ordered to carve the texts preserved in stone and place them in Bangkok's Wat Po. To see the stone slabs carved with the diagrams of the energy lines and special therapeutic point today. School of massage Wat Po, thus, is considered today the most well-known and respected Thai massage school. Massage, which is taught at Wat Po and other schools of this region, called the "southern School" of Thai massage.
