Depression increases the risk of heart failure by 40 percent



The condition of moderate to severe depression increases the risk of heart failure by 40%. It showed a study of nearly 63 000 Norwegians. The results were presented at the annual meeting of cardiologists EuroHeartCare 2014, held in Norway.





This is one of the first large, prospective studies on the effect of depression on the risk of developing heart failure. Data were collected during a large study in Norway. It was agreed to accept the participation of nearly 63 000 of the 97 000 citizens. Tused Hustad, author of the study said: "Depressive symptoms increase the chance of developing heart failure and the more serious the symptoms, the greater the risk of depression given to the people." During the study period, almost 1,500 people have earned the heart failure. Compared with residents without symptoms of depression, people with mild symptoms had a 5% increased risk of heart failure, and people with severe depression had a 40% increased risk.
