Floating skyscraper is able to eat from the sun and clean the ocean

A new unique project was presented by South Korean designer Song Jin Cho at the eVolo Skyscraper architectural competition – 2014. The new project is able not only to generate electricity using seawater and sunlight, but also to clean the surrounding waters from plastic waste.

The drifting skyscraper called Seawer consists of a huge drainage hole of 550 meters in diameter and 300 meters in depth, as well as five layers of whale baleen filters that separate plastic particles from seawater. These particles are then sent to an on-board recycling plant, and the purified seawater is deposited in a large reservoir at the bottom of the structure before being discharged back into the ocean.

It is expected that the skyscraper will float in the center of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - the largest accumulation of plastic waste in the world's oceans. By collecting debris and feeding on energy from renewable sources, the structure will slowly move from one contaminated area to another, gradually cleaning up the ocean ecosystem.
