Low-carb vegan diet reduces the risk of heart disease
Researchers at the hospital of St. Michael first showed that, in addition to weight loss, a specific low-carb diet may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 10 percent over 10 years.
Diet, often called Eco-Atkins is a vegan diet low in carbohydrates. Many of these diets have been proven to promote weight loss, but most are composed of animal proteins and fats that can raise cholesterol. Diets with a high content of vegetable proteins and oils may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by reducing "bad cholesterol".
Dr. David Jenkins says: "We designed a diet that combines veganism and low-carb elements to get weight loss and lowering cholesterol". Eco-Atkins diet lowers cholesterol by 10 percent while also helping the participants to lose several pounds of weight. Members of the diet received 26 percent of calories from carbohydrates, 31 percent from proteins and 43 percent from fat — primarily vegetable oils.
Sources of carbohydrates were foods high in fiber such as oats and barley and low-starch vegetables such as okra and eggplant. Proteins from gluten, soy, vegetables, nuts and cereals. The predominant source of fat diet, Eco-Atkins was nuts, vegetable oils, soy products and avocado.
