Photo report - the city of Torun in Poland

Few people know the famous Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, but few know about the city in which he was born. Torun is an ancient city of Poland, traditionally divided into two parts: old and new quarters. Torun was among those cities that were not destroyed in the fires of world wars. Therefore, tourists can enjoy the real medieval atmosphere of Toruń streets.

The old quarter of the city of Torun is a concentration of old buildings built many centuries ago: these are the houses of citizens and the church, and the town hall. All of them have survived since construction. In the old quarter, a house belonging to the Copernican family has been preserved: the spacious structure has undergone several significant renovations since its construction. When the city authorities decided to establish a museum dedicated to the famous citizen, the house returned its original appearance. The monument to Copernicus, erected in the old quarter, dates back more than 150 years.

The peculiarity of the city is its “gingerbread” status, for a long time Torun is considered the center of gingerbread business. In the city there is even a museum dedicated to gingerbread: in it you can get acquainted with how gingerbread was baked, as it is done today, those who wish can see interesting exhibits.

Anyone who loves art will also not be bored in this city: there are several theaters in Torun. In some performances are held, and in others you can visit musical performances. One of the theaters is difficult not to remember: its structure is made in the form of a dresser.

Oddly enough, the city was founded thanks to the enemies of Poland: the knights of the Teutonic Order, they laid a fortress in these places. Little remained of the fortress: a small section of the moat and part of the central structure with a tower, the rest of the fortress is occupied by ruins. But in its heyday, Torun was one of the most prosperous cities, it was located in places where numerous paths passed.
