Radiation therapy for prostate cancer linked to secondary cancer
According to a study by the University of Michigan, men with prostate cancer who received radiotherapy are more likely to develop cancer of the bladder or rectum.
Doctor of medicine Kathryn Cooney explains: "In General, the incidence of these cancers is quite low. But when people get radiation therapy, they should be aware of the risks of obtaining cancer of the rectum or bladder".
The study observed more 441500 men who received this diagnosis between 1992 and 2010.
The researchers looked at the number of secondary cancers. In General, men with prostate cancer have a low risk of secondary disease. But in the study of patients who received radiotherapy, it was found that 70% have a chance of diagnosing colorectal cancer and over 40% of bladder cancer.
The study's author, Elizabeth George. Davis warns: "prostate Cancer has an excellent prognosis. But since patients tend to live for a long time, it causes concern about the risk of secondary diseases."
