Why the Moon has the shape of a lemon?

Leaving the house, you change, and the Moon is no exception. After it broke away from its progenitor, the Earth, the gravitational force of our planet has changed the form of the moon so that she got a strange convex shape on each side, and an inclined axis. Solving the mystery of the unusual moon shape will help to know when and how it appeared.

Most rocky planets and moons formed from the spinning balls of magma, and so they have spherical form. It is believed that the Moon was created when a space object the size of Mars fell to the Ground and threw molten rocky material into space. In this case, the Moon should be round, but it has strange protrusions at the near and far sides, making her look like a lemon.

There are several theories as to how did these projections, however, do examine the problem proved difficult because since the appearance of the moon, its surface darkened valleys, which conceal its form. One of them, Pool the South pole — Aitken is the largest and deepest impact crater in the Solar system.

Maria Zuber (Maria Zuber) and her colleagues from the Massachusetts Institute of technology (USA) have created a model in which the 12 largest basins were filled, to find out what would the Moon before they occur.

The results show that the spikes, giving it the shape of a lemon, first appeared 200 million years, when the gravitational influence of the Earth pulled the magma of the moon, bringing some parts of the bark to the Ground.

Tilt axis of the moon remains a mystery. When it appeared the projections were aimed directly at Earth, but now they are at 36 degrees. The researchers suggest that when you remove the moon from the Earth the density of the cooling crust was different in some areas. The lateral part of the cortex has acquired a rough shape and tipped the polar axis of the moon at that angle that exists today.
