Savings in small things - the stop-start system

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), a car owner could save $179 a year on fuel if his car automatically drowned out the engine when stopped at a traffic light. The technology is known as “stop start” or “micro hybrid”.

The number of car owners in Europe already using this low-cost fuel economy strategy is approaching 50%. The U.S. is also gradually beginning to introduce a similar practice: 500,000 new cars sold were equipped with a stop-start system. According to Navigant Research, the number will reach 7 million by 2022.

The essence of the stop-start function: the engine is silenced when the car stops, and starts again as soon as the driver removes his foot from the brake pedal. This reduces total fuel consumption by about 5-10%.

The technology requires almost no adjustment of behavior by motorists. Automatic braking and starting technology is easily applicable to standard internal combustion engines, said Greg Brennon, director of the AAA automotive engineering team.

The list of concerns currently using or about to offer this feature includes Audi, Buick, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche. Especially interested are manufacturers of premium cars, whose fuel consumption is a kilometer higher.

In almost all models, the stop-start function can be turned off at the request of the driver, however, it is recommended to reduce gasoline consumption.
