Insulin in the treatment of acute pancreatitis

A recent study at the University of Manchester shows that the insulin released from the beta cells of the pancreas, can prevent the toxic effects of alcohol and metabolites of fatty acids.

Dr. Jason Bruce: "the Main causes of pancreatitis are bile acid reflux from gall stones and excessive alcohol consumption, combined with a high fat content. In fact, the incidence of acute pancreatitis significantly increases during the holidays when alcohol and fat consumption is at its highest level. Then alcohol and fat accumulate inside pancreatic cells. Cells secrete digestive enzymes into the gut – metabolites. As a result of the process toxins which digest the pancreas and surrounding tissues".

Team Bruce decided to check insulin, because it has been successfully used to treat patients suffering from obesity by reducing fatty acids in the blood. Diabetes makes pancreatitis worse, and diabetics have a higher risk of developing pancreatitis and multiple organ failure. In addition, patients with diabetes treated with insulin, the incidence of pancreatitis is reduced. These studies have shown that insulin may have a protective role, although researchers have been unclear how it works.

Now, researchers at Manchester provides the first evidence that insulin protects the acinar cells, where it triggers a disease. Bruce explains: "Insulin works by restoring the energy levels of pancreatic acinar cells, which act as calcium pumps on the membrane of these cells. They help to restore cellular calcium and prevent cell death and autodigestion of the pancreas."
