Gaslighting: Passive aggression
Gaslighting is a type of psychological violence; describes manipulative behavior, the purpose of which is to sow doubt in another person about the reality of what is happening and his own perception of reality, exposing a person to be “crazy.”
The aggressor convinces the victim that she is mistaken in her thoughts and feelings about herself or her life. That they are unnatural and caused by fatigue, magnetic storms, misunderstanding, lack of competence, hidden mental disorder, etc. That is, everything that causes the victim to dissatisfaction is immediately explained by the aggressor. Gradually, the victim begins to put up with the fact that something is wrong with her, which prevents her from really looking at things. It recognizes the power of the aggressor, because only he correctly understands what is happening.
The title comes from the film Gaslight (1944). The girl becomes a witness to strange recurring phenomena, while her husband, whose actions are caused by these phenomena, assures that she sees everything, and almost brings to psychosis.
Keywords and phrases: “You complicate everything”; “You think so because you are depressed”; “You overreact to ordinary remarks.”
According to clinical psychologist Yakov Kochetkov, “behind gaslighting there is a strong fear of recognizing one’s contribution to the problem, losing one’s own dignity or feeling “good.”
What if you are a victim of a gaslighter? It is unlikely that gaslighting can really bring to the hospital, but neurosis is guaranteed. Psychotherapists and sociologists advise different things. From “talk to the abuser” to “exchange roles with him”. They advise you not to doubt yourself in any case, not to pick on your memory, trying to restore events, not to justify yourself and not to look for reasons in yourself. It is advised to go to a professional, so that it is he, and not a homegrown “psychoanalyst”, who made the diagnosis, if any. They advise you to go ahead, despite the constant attempts of the gaslighter to put sticks in your wheels. They also advise you to have the courage to part with someone who is turning your life into a nightmare as soon as possible.
P.S. And remember, just by changing your consciousness – together we change the world!
