Depression in adolescents is associated with fear

A recent study (authors Gary Ladd, Karen Rudolph, Karen Kochel) about child development reports that adolescent depression is associated with stress and fear in the relationship with their peers.

Karen Kochel says: "it is Often assumed that problematic relationships between peers are the core of depression. We found that the problem lies in the negative attitude of peers".

Studies show that children who had problems in relationships with peers, in the 4th grade, had problems in relationships in the 5th and 6th grades.

Researchers interviewed 486 children from fourth, fifth and sixth graders. The study began in 1992 and lasted almost 20 years.

Kochel explains: "Adolescence is a time when we are seeing increased symptoms of depression, especially in girls."

There is speculation that this may be due to early puberty or social pressure. Also throughout the observations parents were asked to pay attention to signs of depression: depression, decreased activity, mood swings, tearfulness. Parents reported that the main factors are: bullying, abuse, physical violence.

Also stresses that for adolescents it is extremely important to have concrete relationships with their peers. This helps them to adapt to other aspects of life.

Timely diagnosis of adolescent depression is extremely important because it affects social adaptation and its consequences will affect the entire future of human life.

The authors note that the most appropriate place for the diagnosis of depression is the school because her child spends a lot of time (even more than with parents), there is a main circle of its dialogue, and this is a very important stage of human evolution.
