Why to be a vegetarian twice greener

For the first time, researchers from Climatic Change compare the carbon footprint of different products and CO2 emissions left by meat eaters and vegetarians. And brought figures that should know all of the conscious consumers.

The study, which was conducted in the UK, compares data on actual diets of vegans 2041, 15751 vegetarians 8123 fish eaters, and meat eaters 28589.

British researchers calculated the greenhouse gas emissions 289 types of food, including the whole life cycle of food-from growing and to store shelves. Diet each person was standardized da 2000 kcal, so that the differences in the calculation of the energy consumption of the different groups did not affect the final results.

It was discovered that high levels of greenhouse gas emissions were from flesh-eating men and low in women vegans.

That's what daily leaves the carbon footprint of the average man and woman:

— regular meat-eaters (more than 100 grams of meat products per day): 7.26 kg CO2-equivalent.
— occasional meat eaters (less than 50 grams per day): about 4.67 kg
fish diet: 3,94 kg

— vegetarians: 3.85 kg
— vegans: 2,94 kg

The results show that at an average rate of 2000 kcal a regular meat diet has 2.5 times more greenhouse gas emissions than the average vegetarian diet. The transition from regular meat diet to irregular can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by each individual from 920 kg of CO2 per year.

And if you switch to vegetarianism, you can shrink it at 1230 kg of CO2 a year, vegan — 1560 kg CO2 per year. For comparison, the flight from Moscow to Thailand adds 960 kg of CO2 annually to the carbon footprint of man. published by P. S.
