In the Netherlands are testing the servers to heat homes

Dutch energy company Eneco with more than 2 million customer installs in five houses of the country "e-Radiators" servers, which will heat the room in the process. The experiment show the economic feasibility of using servers instead of traditional radiators. Families will save 400€ per year on heating.

The server in the form of a radiator

Technology startup Nerdalize. It all started with the jokes after the failure of the thermostat, when the founder offered to buy hundreds of laptops. Startup proposes to use this technology to companies and research institutions as an alternative and cheaper option than the placement of servers in data centers. Nerdalize will pay for the electricity consumption, so that homeowners will receive free heat. The third "winner" would be the environment — because energy is effectively used simultaneously for powering servers and heating.

The radiator heats the water in a closed system to a temperature of 45-55°C, temperature can be controlled, and excess heat "dumped" on the street. In the future it will be possible to use longer pipe to the radiator can warm more than one room.

In Germany in November 2014 a similar solution was offered by the company Cloud & Heat. Here operates a comprehensive system of water heating: the heat generated by the rack server, heats the tank of water. Electricity bills will take on the service provider, but the home owner must pay for the installation of the heating system.

But first proposed this idea, researchers from Microsoft Research in 2011. The temperature in the server is around 40-50°C, enough to heat the house, dryers, water heaters and greenhouses. published
