A new solution in the field of energy conservation — based storage of liquefied air

Due to the fact that conventional power plants running on coal, complete their life cycle, there are new challenges for engineers, requiring the creation of new, clean and reliable technologies. Renewable energy technologies offer a possible solution, but remains not yet resolved the issue of preservation of the received energy for use at a later time.

In recent months there is a new solution in the field of conservation of energy — energy storage based on liquid air (Liquid Air Energy Storage LAES), which can become a reliable, scalable store of energy for the long term.

A container for liquid air at the height of 12.5 metres and 3 metres in diameter even empty weighs more than 16 tons.

Firm Highview Power Storage together with a partner firm, Viridor, has recently received 8 million pounds (11.4 million dollars) from the Department of energy and climate change the UK to develop, create and test a LAES installation capacity of 5 megawatts, which should provide long-term storage of energy.

"Our technology of conservation of energy as liquid air is isolated containers with liquefied air, which is used when there is a need for energy," explains Matthew Burnett (Matthew Barnett), head of business development at Highview Power. "Like all systems of energy conservation, LAES system consists of 3 processes: a charging system; energy storage; energy generation. However, unlike most other energy storage systems, in this case you can scale and optimize the system for various applications".

Barnett says that their technology is that the air by cooling (below — 196°C) is translated into a liquid state and stored in insulated tanks. When it comes to energy, the liquid air is removed from the container. The produced gas with high pressure is used to rotate turbines and generate electricity. Of 700 liters of ordinary air to make one gallon of liquid air, so it provides significant opportunities for saving and producing gigawatt-hours of energy.

One of the problems of LAES technology — transportation of containers to the place of installation

Highview has already experienced and demonstrated fully functional LAES pilot-plant with capacity of 350 KW, is able to maintain a 2.5 MWh of energy meets all the necessary requirements. published
