Developed hybrid nanogenerator, collecting ocean energy

The ocean is a really huge source of energy, but actually energy generated from the ocean is the least used at the moment. Despite the fact that the efficiency of the ocean is enough to satisfy all the energy needs of the whole world, until now did not exist any effective way to “collect” energy from ocean waves. The main problem here is that ocean waves are irregular in their movement and move with a fairly low frequency – it is not possible to collect ocean energy, using the traditional model of technology, able to recycle energy into electricity.

However, in their new study, whose results were published in the journal ACS Nano, the team of experts under the leadership of Professor Zhong Lin Wang from Georgia Institute of Technology managed to develop a device that is able to collect ocean waves in the broad field frequency. Including a device able to collect energy from waves at a sufficiently low frequency of their movement that it becomes a confident step forward in the development of these technologies.

The new unit is a hybrid system functioning on the basis of two separate generators. The system includes the electromagnetic generator, which is the traditional device to collect and convert energy from natural resources and triboelectric nanogenerator, which perfectly shows itself in the low-frequency motion of the waves in the ocean.

As reported by Wang, project Manager, triboelectric nanogenerators and therefore is effective in this system that has a high output voltage – this allows him to work even at the lowest frequency dynamics of ocean waves. In addition, as shown by preliminary tests, the use of such a nanogenerator is more energy-efficient than enterprise.
