In the UK the power of solar power has exceeded coal power
Solar energy set a new record in the UK. April 9 at 24 hours in the country homes and businesses receive more energy from the sun than from burning coal.
For the first time in the history of the country during all the days of the power of solar power plants has exceeded the total capacity of coal-fired plants. According to analysts, this is a symbolic event which shows how in recent years in the UK plummeted extraction and use of coal, while solar energy is becoming more and more popular.
According to analyst firm Carbon Brief, April 9, almost 29 gigawatt-hours of energy was created with the help of solar cells. This is about 4% of the national needs. In this case coal power plants on the same day we made a 21 gigawatt-hours.
This is the first such shift in the power supply system. Sunny "breakthrough" could not take place without an increase in power of solar installations. However, the collapse in coal generation had a more immediate cause, experts say. Over the past two years the number of solar installations in the UK has increased significantly. Photo panels generate 12 gigawatts of energy, while the whole country produces 80-90 gigawatts of electricity.
At the same time a number of large coal-fired power stations have closed. Last coal plant in Scotland stopped working in March. Coal UK economy deteriorated sharply in the last 18 months. Coal-fired power plants have become a very unprofitable, and the reason for this is the low wholesale price and an increase in the carbon tax from 8 to 18 pounds. Meanwhile, analysts expect that solar energy will attract a third of all energy investment worldwide by 2040, so it will play an important role in combating climate change.
