A new kind of beautiful clear snails found deep underground

Amazing glass pantsir

A new species of snails with a beautiful translucent shell was recently discovered at a depth of 915-meter underground in a Croatian cave. A team of speleologists and biologists from the Croatian Speleological Society has found the snail species Zospeum tholussum in Lukina cave in the west of Croatia - it is one of 20 deepest cave systems in the world.

The team collected all kinds of living things found on your way, as deep cracks in the caves are often the habitat of previously unknown species. So they accidentally found one living specimen of the new snail and two empty shells of snails of the same kind next to her.

To identify the type of the researchers enlisted the help of a German taxonomist Ueygandu Alexander, who confirmed that this type of snail was previously unknown, but that it is associated with two other related species.

In the cochlea there are no eyes, and its shell has no pigmentation, which is typical for the species, developing and living in total darkness. It is believed that the snail moves in the water or on the backs of other animals like the cave of bats and crickets to most quickly and effectively move from one place to another.
