Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo

One of the most unusual and creepy places on the planet - Cemetery of the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo in the Italian. It was founded back in the 16th century at the Capuchin Monastery and unusual tradition here was the opening of the burial of bodies.





Initially, in the catacombs beneath the monastery were buried only priests and monks, whose bodies were well preserved in these conditions. Later there were buried and the representatives of the local elite. The bodies of the dead were placed initially in a special room to dry, after which they were to dress in elegant clothes and put on public display in a special niche or open coffin. In total there are about 8,000 bodies, some of which are placed on a shelf or posted on the walls.
Some bodies mummified or embalmed. For each category of deaths within the designated facilities, and some bodies are composed various compositions. The last burial in the Catacombs of the Capuchins happened in 1920, when the embalmed body was placed here year-old girl Rosalia Lombardo, remaining incorruptible until now.
