Apple vs Oculus Rift: sight on the gaming market?

Yesterday (September 9, 2014) US Patent Office issued a patent US8832557B2 «Adjusting media display in a personal display system based on perspective» corporation Apple, Inc. virtual reality helmet, like Oculus Rift. The application for this patent was filed February 27, 2008


Back in September 2009, Apple granted patent US7595933B2 « Head mounted display system ». And in 2013, Apple acquired the company PrimeSense involved in the development of technical solutions for systems of virtual / augmented reality. Earlier development PrimeSense were used in Smart Terrain from Qualcomm and WAVI Xtion from ASUS . Together with PrimeSense Apple acquired patent applications US20130230215A1 «Identifying components of a humanoid form in three-dimensional scenes», US20130207970A1 «Scanning depth engine» and many others. Even before the acquisition PrimeSense Apple Research Center in Tel Aviv intensively studied the problems of three-dimensional analysis of body movements and facial recognition.

In conjunction with other patents and patent applications Apple (for example, US20140098009A1 «Head Mounted Display»), this clearly indicates that the vector of interest to system virtual Apple / augmented reality, and more particularly to gaming systems. Given the technological capabilities of Apple and its competitors in this segment of the market (Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Qualcomm, Nintendo and other IT-majors), it is logical to expect a breakthrough in this area in the next two to three years.
