At Harvard, created a 25-dollar mini-laboratory for determination of a number of diseases

Usually, if it comes to medicine and medical gadgets mentioned amount, the price of these gadgets, surprising even professionals. Thus, a portable ultrasound scanner, which recently wrote Habré, costs about 17 thousand dollars.

It is understood that such devices are not for the casual user, home use, but still quite high prices. But there are exceptions: the development team from Harvard introduced a portable detector, mini-lab, the price of which is only $ 25.

The device can perform a number of medical tests, which typically are quite expensive and are executed for a long time. Here, all the work is done in minutes, and the result is passed through the cable into the audio jack of the mobile phone. and further, a cellular communication server. Such a device can be used anywhere where there is at least a weak cellular signal: a medical facility receives data, remove the device, even from a remote African village.

In its work, the device uses a series of electroanalytical methods: chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, potentiometry, etc.). As a result of the mini-lab allows for such tests:
  • to determine the level of glucose in the blood;
  • definition of the content of heavy metals in the water, including lead, cadmium, zinc;
  • determination of sodium in the body;
  • malaria antigen detection (ie, detection of the fact of malaria).
     All of this - at the small size, low-cost manufacturing and simple data transfer. Such a device can be used in remote locations where there is only cellular, with no need to carry a patient from a remote village in the hospital, sometimes hundreds of kilometers away. Five copies of the devices already sent to India to verify the functionality of mini-lab in the field.
