Gone under the water
All, of course, have heard the legend of Atlantis - the ancient, once-great city, all perished in the depths of the sea.
To this day, the legendary city was never found (as, indeed, there is no evidence of its existence), but others have been found underwater cities, each of which is as ominous as it is marvelous.
1. Port Royal, Jamaica.
When that this city was notorious worldwide for its pirates, girls, drinking and rampant night of fun, it was called "the most dirty and sinful city on earth".
Everything was so. But in June 1692 the monstrous earthquake measuring 7 5 points struck Jamaica and Port Royal went under water due to its unsteady base, carrying with it the lives of two million of its people. Was the accident fatal coincidence, or whether it was payback for all the sins committed there? For hundreds of years people have been convinced of the latter.
In the following years after the disaster notorious former once one of the largest European cities in the New World, Port Royal continued to sink under the water, and was now hidden under a twelve-layer of ocean water. Sunken city became incredibly popular place for archaeological research, because there are today almost perfectly preserved artifacts
2. Pyramids of Yonaguni, Japan.
Until now, experts still argue about whether created a monument of Yonaguni off the coast of Japan, a man or a natural phenomenon.
Although there is evidence to support this theory, but still, looking at the stone terraces triangular pyramid components, it is very difficult to believe. Pyramid rises 76 meters above the sea floor and, like a magnet, attracts divers from all over the world.
If the pyramids were indeed created by human hands, as experts believe that it is likely to happen during the last Ice Age - about 10 thousand years BC.
3. Dwarka, Gulf of Cambay, India.
The ancient city of the god Krishna was once considered only a myth, but the ruins discovered in 2000, breathed life into an old Indian legend.
Legend has it that Krishna possessed a magnificent city, where there were 70 thousand palaces of gold, silver and other precious metals. The city flourished, however, after the death of Krishna Dwarka allegedly drowned in the sea.
The ruins are located at a depth of 40 meters under the water in the bay of the modern city of Dwarka, one of the seven oldest in India. Acoustic studies, the results of which hit the specialists indicated that the ruins have remarkably clear geometric shapes.
Many artifacts have been found in this place, but perhaps the most important finding was one of them, referred to 7500 BC, which supports the theory that the ruins may well be part of the ancient Dwarka
4. Lions city under Qiandaohu Lake, China.
Named the most spectacular underwater city in the world, the lion city in China, and indeed, the real miracle.
It was built in the era of the Eastern Han dynasty in about 25-200 AD and the area was equal to about 62 football fields. Today, the city is located at a depth of 25 - 40 meters below the surface of the Thousand Islands Lake, an artificial reservoir created in 1950 for the construction of the dam.
The sculptures that adorn the city, the beauty even rivals Alexandria, therefore, not surprising that the Lion City is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China.
5. Cleopatra Palace, Alexandria, Egypt.
Just off the coast of Alexandria, the alleged palace of Cleopatra, queen of ancient Egypt. The remains were under water as a result of the earthquake more than a thousand years ago and were hidden from view until recently.
Archaeologists have also claimed that not far from the royal palace found the temple of Isis. To date, the ruins were discovered more than 140 artifacts, and experts believe they were able to locate the tomb of Cleopatra and the ancient ruins of the museum.
Hopefully, the ruins are open to divers and tourists in the coming years, which will allow all of us to look more closely at the magic that is a palace of Cleopatra.
