Recall Alexander Nevsky (1220 -1263) - Prince of Novgorod, Grand Duke Vladimir, an outstanding statesman, military leader and diplomat. Among the famous battles won by Alexander Nevsky - Battle of the Neva with the Swedes in 1240 and the Battle of the Ice with German knights (Crusaders) on Lake Peipus in 1242. Grand Duke died on November 24 (December 6, new style) 1263, in Gorodets, returning from the Horde, where he went in 1262 to through diplomatic negotiations to avoid another invasion of Russia Horde forces. He succeeded, but on the way from the Horde sacred prince Alexander Nevsky mortally ill and died. Among a number of historians it is believed that he was poisoned by the Horde, because the new Khan Berke, replacing Batu Khan, did not want to strengthen Russia feared St. Prince Alexander, seeing his collective center of Russian forces.
Prince Alexander Nevsky after his death was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.
