The day of Alexander Nevsky the Holy Blessed Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky was born on May 30, 1220. Alexander was born and raised in a respected family. In 1227, his father Yaroslav began to reign in Novgorod, where he brought his sons. Then for Russia came dark times - the threat loomed from all sides.
From the east came the Mongol horde, and from the west the knightly regiments. In order to protect Russia from destruction, Providence of God sent to the people the holy Prince Alexander, according to believers. Then his great accomplishments began.
The Swedes first struck, taking advantage of the invasion of the Mongolian Khan Batu. When the crusader regiments under the command of Jarl Birger approached the Neva, Alexander was not yet 20 years old.
Before the battle, the prince prayed for a long time in the temple and was blessed by Archbishop Spyridon to fight. After leaving the temple, Alexander said to his soldiers, “God is not in power, but in truth.” Some with arms, others on horses, but we will call upon the name of the Lord our God.
With prayer and faith in his heart, Alexander led his army against the Swedes. It was a great battle, which culminated in the victory of the Russian soldiers. For the feat on the Neva people and called the prince Saint Alexander Nevsky. It happened on July 15, 1240.
The second great and victorious battle with the Swedes occurred in 1241, when Alexander returned the fortress of Koporje, defeating the knights. In 1242, he liberated Pskov and fought the soldiers of the Teutonic Order on the ice of Lake Peipus, winning another great victory. It is this battle that historians call the Battle of Ice.
After the Knights were defeated, it was time to deal with the Eastern threat. The issue was decided peacefully, and Alexander and his father went to the Horde. The Lord succeeded in this mission, but it took time and sacrifice.
For this peace, Prince Yaroslav gave his life, bequeathing his son to continue the mission. The great intercessor repeatedly went to the Horde to wisely direct events in the right direction. All ended with the fact that Khan Barke proclaimed the Golden Horde an independent state, making it a barrier to Russia from the east.
This diplomatic trip was the last for Prince Alexander. On the way back to the monastery near Vladimir, the prince gave his spirit to the Lord. On November 14, 1263, he completed his long-suffering journey and rested in peace.
The holy body was transferred to Vladimir, the journey lasted nine days, but the body remained incorruptible. During the burial of the prince in the Cathedral Church of the Nativity Monastery, a miracle was revealed: the saint extended his hand for permissive prayer.
The veneration of the prince began after his burial. The name of Alexander Nevsky, the patron saint of soldiers, is widely known. Many temples were built in his honor, in which prayers are still offered.
The festival is celebrated among the people, although it is not among the great ones. Saint Alexander became famous for his exploits, and is still praised by the common people. On this day it is customary to congratulate all Alexandrov on the holiday. In addition, those born on this day are called in honor of the great warrior. It is believed that these children will be happy.
The most important tradition of this day is to go to church and say a prayer. Saint Alexander is asked for protection and healing. You can also ask for courage and luck in the upcoming business. So that the saint may hear you, say a prayer and ask what you want.
Prayer to Alexander Nevsky "Speed helper to all who zealously resort to you, and our warm before the Lord to the protégé, holy and faithful, Grand Duke Alexandra!"
Be merciful to us who are unworthy, many iniquities are unworthy of creation, to the race of your relics (or to your holy icon) now flowing and from the depths of your heart calling to you. In your life you have been a zealous and defender of the Orthodox faith, and in it we are steadfast in your warm prayers to God. Thou hast done the great service which thou hast entrusted to thee carefully, and by thy help thou shalt dwell here and there, in whom thou hast been called to eat, instruct us.
You, having defeated the regiments of supostats, drove you away from the borders of the Russians: and you will bring down all visible and invisible enemies who are fighting against us. You, having left the corruptible crown of the earthly kingdom, have chosen a silent life, and now you have reigned with a righteous incorruptible crown crowned in heaven: proceed also to us, humbly we pray, a quiet and serene life, and to the Eternal Kingdom, a procession steady by your exaltation, arrange for us.
Standing with all the saints to the Throne of God, pray for all Orthodox Christians, that the Lord God may preserve them by His grace in peace, health, longevity and all prosperity in the longest years, that we may glorify and bless God in the Trinity of the Holy Glorified, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen.
The life of Saint Alexander is inspiring and impressive. In general, the lives of saints are stories filled with wisdom and an example of true faith. Recently we told you about the life of St. Sergius of Radonezh, whose faith is truly inspiring.
