Stonewall uprising of sexual minorities (7 photos)

They say it happened because a New York police learned about the betrayal of his beloved. But this uprising began exactly 44 years ago, on the night of Friday to Saturday, June 28, 1969, when police raided "Stonewall Inn", a gay bar in Greenwich Village New York.

That night homosexuals who have always considered a parody of masculinity, the first time the police had fierce resistance, and it was then that was born the famous American anecdote: "Night at the police station in New York. Languid duty policeman sawing nail polishes. Another policeman rushes "Alarm, lift all! In Greenwich Village queers are fighting with the police! ". The duty continues to calmly clean his nails: "Well, as there is our?»

Like most gay bars, "Stonewall Inn" belonged to the Italian Mafia - namely, the Genovese family, one of the "Five Families" in New York. The bar did not have a license to sell alcohol, and worked as a private dance club (so-called "bottle bar"), where to get a drink, you had to first register.
In addition, the "Stonewall Inn" was the only bar for gay men in New York, where they were free to dance with each other. The bar is also provided as entertainment "Boys on call" and drugs.

Therefore police raids in the "Stonewall Inn" were commonplace, with the only difference from the usual round-ups - it has detained and "undocumented persons who wore clothes of the opposite sex." Visits police were usually held once a month, not too late, warn them in advance, and all the transvestites in women's dresses, distributors of drugs and underage teens left the bar to return to it after the raid and continue "fun».

But that night police raid began suddenly, at 1:20 - well after the usual time, at the peak hour traffic, and without the usual warning. Rumor that the raid organized by a jealous gay cop who learned that on the night of his domestic partner is cheating on him at the bar "Stonewall Inn».

The general mood of the detainees, can convey in words of one of the rioters Steve Ritter, who recalled: "Most of all I was afraid that I would be arrested and my photo in my mother's dress will be published in the newspaper!».
And then spontaneously emerged that would later be called "Stonewall Riots" or "Stonewall uprising" - detainees, which led to a police car, resisted the police, the crowd stood up for them, there was a fierce fight with the police.

Overwhelmed by the unexpected reaction of men in women's dresses, the police retreated back to the bar, had barricaded themselves in it, and called for reinforcements (and Th? - I would have feared).

To disperse the riot police unit came under the name of "tactical patrol," which was used in protests against the Vietnam War.
However, to disperse the crowd they could not - in the arrivals rained hail of stones, beer cans and women's wigs. In this crowd, not without humor shouting: «Faggot Cops!» (Eng. "The cops - fag!»).

Clashes with the police continued until 4 am, a mass continued in the following days. They were accompanied by broken windows, overturning cars, arson and all the other attributes of the turbulent times of American 60's, the time of anti-war demonstrations against the war in Vietnam, the hippie movement, movement of blacks for what to call them "niggers" and other feminist and different sorts kinky countercultural.

"Stonewall Riots" are considered the first mass event in recent history, when mannerism "fagot" gave way to rage, and homosexuals have become so mad and ferocious, they became massively to resist during the pogroms.

These events are usually considered the starting point of the beginning of the modern world the movement for the rights of homosexuals. And they laid the foundation of a new tradition - the last Sunday in June to arrange worldwide mass homosexual "pride parades».
In June 1994 in New York to mark the 25th anniversary of the "Stonewall events" on a parade «Stonewall 25" they were more than a million people. In June 1999, the US Department of Interior has assigned building a gay bar "Stonewall Inn" the title of National Historic Landmark.

So if you see on the streets of their cities just such beauties, do not be surprised - it is they are so proud of the events of 44 years ago.
