Floating laboratory

This vessel has added more than half a century ago and is still one of a kind. Ship capable of receiving both horizontal and vertical position, a truly unique vehicle.

FLIP - an acronym which stands for «Floating Instrument Platform», or in Russian "Floating tool platform." In fact, the ship is a research laboratory. The idea of creating FLIPa was to study the propagation of sound waves through the water column. Now, the ship has become more multifunctional and conducts studies of storm and seismic activity, as well as water circulation. The transition from horizontal to vertical position in the vessel takes about half an hour. Moves along the surface of FLIP in a horizontal position. Offices are at the stern, which does not go into the water, and the rest of the vessel contains compartments that are filled with water when changing the position of the ship, and research equipment. The total length of the vessel is 108 meters, of which the water are only 17 meters and width FLIPa - 7, 9 meters. Ships can not swim on their own, because it does not have engines. This was done in connection with the acoustic studies for which such mechanisms interfere. The ship was launched in 1962 and is owned by the Office of Naval Research USA. Last renovation ship 17 years ago cost the state $ 2 million.
