Is it true that the Union produced the best semi-finished products and snacks in the world?

The legendary Soviet seal and doctoral sausage for many still remain a cause for nostalgia. But I have never heard from my parents about the purchased dumplings, dumplings or hoarders. What do we know? quality of semi-finished products and snacks USSR? Today we will try to find out the most interesting!

What do we know about the food industry of the USSR? First, the Union could not boast of a special abundance of food. Secondly, people often face shortages of goods. But the products actually tried to make of natural ingredients, although even then they used dyes and various preservatives.

However, the emphasis was on pure composition without so-called chemistry. And the quality of semi-finished products and snacks in the USSR and in the West was seriously different. If you go to a modern supermarket and read the composition on a pack of chips or crackers, your hair will stand on end. Agree, to include such food in the category of useful will not work.

When semi-finished products began to appear on the shelves of Soviet stores, it caused a real furor. Firstly, it is very convenient to be able not to stick out at the stove for a long time, but to buy something ready-made. Secondly, the nutritional value of such dishes is not inferior to home.

For example, soup concentrates were sold in packages. This is not just some kind of powder of unknown origin, but really vegetables and meat that were previously dried and ground. Popularly used broth cubes. They included meat, vegetables, vegetable and animal fats, as well as salt, sugar and spices.

Often such cubes for broth were sold in tin cans. Their enterprising Soviet hostess did not throw away, but used to store other products or small things.

Legendary corn sticks literally come from the USSR. The development of the product was carried out by the scientist V. Y. Krikunov. And the first packaging was released in 1963 at the Dnipropetrovsk combine of food concentrates. They sold salty and sweet sticks. If you were lucky, you could find a flavored product: sticks with a taste of lemon or vanilla.

The first chips appeared in Moscow the same year. At first they were called crispy potatoes. And their taste was completely in line with the name. However, this is understandable, because the composition included potatoes, salt and potato starch. There was no mention of any taste enhancers. However, only residents of large cities could afford such a culinary delight. No one in the province has even heard of such a product.

For a while, frozen French fries were sold in cities with millions of inhabitants. It looked natural as ready-made potatoes for deep frying. But the product did not justify itself, and very soon it was discontinued. And residents of small towns and villages had no idea that such products were ever sold.

There were dumplings in the USSR, too. They appeared at the same time as large food plants. Initially, production had two stages. First, the machines made mince and dough. Then people hand-sculpted dumplings. So that the edges of the dough did not stick together, they were fastened with egg white.

Interestingly, people's opinions about dumplings vary greatly. Someone remembers them with love, they say, they no longer do such things. And for some, the taste of Soviet dumplings was simply disgusting. As it turned out, very often the product was improperly transported, because of which the dumplings were sized, then frozen again and in the process of cooking turned into porridge.

But we could not find information about dumplings from Soviet shops. Do you know if they were sold in stores?
