Ukrainian singer Lyudmila Monastyrskaya replaced Netrebko on the main opera stage in the United States

Russian opera singer Anna Netrebko is not the first year working abroad. Fans heard her voice in Europe and the United States. However, the war in Ukraine, unleashed by Russia, forever changed the life of the artist. For example, on the stage of one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world it was replaced by Ukrainian Lyudmila Monastyrskaya. Why Netrebko was fired, read further in the article.

People with a Russian passport working abroad, faced a lot of problems. This is especially true for those who openly support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Opera singer Anna Netrebko herself signed the verdict. She did not want to oppose the war, thus supporting the actions of the Russian authorities.

The position of the artist did not like the leadership of one of the most prestigious opera houses. Netrebko was fired from the New York Metropolitan Opera. Instead, to perform the title role in the opera Giacomo Puccini “Turandot” called the Ukrainian. Lyudmila Monastyrskaya could not imagine that one day she would personally call Peter Gelb, the CEO of the American Opera House.

In an interview with The New York Times, Lyudmila honestly admitted that she initially wanted to refuse. First of all, she had already had experience with Turandot, and it was physically tough. The main party requires a lot of effort. Secondly, the singer simply did not want to play this role and sign someone else’s contract.

However, the Metropolitan Opera CEO managed to convince her. The appearance of the Monastyrskaya on the stage is another opportunity to draw public attention to the war in Ukraine. “I realized that my singing was important. I will do everything that depends on me, commented Lyudmila.

Instagram / @musicseasons_ Peter Gelb invited the Monastery for a reason. The woman has a really amazing and powerful soprano. This is what Ukraine should sound like abroad. Lyudmila appeared on the stage of the theater as a mature professional artist.

The performance of Lyudmila Monastery Hall applauded the singer standing. When the Monastery went to the audience to bow, she threw the flag of her native country on herself. The song was liked not only by the audience, but also by critics. For example, Corinne da Fonseca-Wolheim, one of the main critics of The New York Time, called Lyudmila’s performance a triumph.

Previously, the singer did not associate his life with politics. However, she has now taken an active public stance. Its task is to convey to people the truth about what is really happening in Ukraine. In the future, the artist will also replace another opera singer from Russia. The monastery will sing instead of Hibla Gerzmava in Giacomo Puccini's Tosca.

In addition, this summer Lyudmila will go on a tour of Europe and the United States. She will sing the famous Abscheulicher aria from German composer Ludwig van Beethoven's opera Fidelio.

Having lost most of her work in the West, Anna Netrebko tried to renounce her political position. “I am not a member of any party and I am not allied with any of Russia’s leaders,” she said in a speech at the end of March.

According to her, her work, on the contrary, sought to strengthen the world and its unity with art. However, all this did not help the singer to return to the Metropolitan Opera.

A sharp change in the narrative in the statements of the artist did not bring her anything good. There was news that she was deprived of a place in the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater. Anna was attacked not only by the authorities, but also by ordinary Russians. Well, apparently, such a “patriot” Russia is simply not needed. That doesn't surprise us, though.

Despite the problems that befell Netrebko, she can still work in Europe. However, what the future holds for the opera singer, only time will tell. I wonder what you think of this situation?
