Running the world's most powerful substation in lithium-ion batteries

Company Southern California Edison (SCE) has launched the world's largest substation in lithium-ion batteries. Industrial batteries Tesla Powerpack 2 produce 80 MWh of energy. Mira Loma substation located in Ontario, California, and is able during the day to provide energy to more than 2,500 farms or charge 1000 cars Tesla. But its purpose is not that. It should ensure the safety of electricity generated by solar and wind stations and to help the grid to cope with peak loads.

Two more stations with a total capacity of 37.5 MW has to be built in the County San Diego company AES Energy Storage. All three projects appeared due to the closure of the reservoir natural gas in the canyon Alison, who was the energy source for local power plants. In October 2015, the manifold has been a major accident with release of gas into the atmosphere. Methane leak lasted for several months and was 107 000 tonnes. Had to evacuate 8,000 local residents. In April 2016 a gas manifold permanently sealed with concrete.

Tesla and SCE shall not disclose the contract value, but similar substation 20 MW, built for the SCE company AltaGas, cost $40-45 million

The company Tesla has released the second model of the lithium-ion backup systems energy storage Powerpack 2 with twice the capacity in November last year. Her feature — new reversible inverter, which allows to increase the capacity without increasing the size of the system. published
