10 films about the secret meaning of which you did not know

Like literature, cinema sometimes carries much more meaning than we see with the naked eye. Screenwriters and directors often not only show a story with a beautiful picture, but also put an implicit but deep subtext into it to tell about some philosophical, historical or social problem.

Website I found the most famous films, which probably tell a little bit about different than it seems at first glance.

"The Beginning" - filmmaking process

Inception is a metaphor for the filmmaking process. Each hero of the “dream team” has its own role, which corresponds to the duties of specific members of the film crew: Ames (Tom Hardy) is an actor who easily changes appearances. Ariadne (Ellen Page) creates dream scenarios Saito (Ken Watanabe) is the studio’s CEO, who pays for the entire project; Yusuf (Dilip Rao) is in charge of special effects; Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levit) is the production artist who ensures the implementation of the plans, and Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the director – the only person who sees how it should look at the end. The task of the whole team is to generate an idea in the head of a person. Isn’t that the case for cinema in general?

The Matrix - conspiracy theory

The Matrix is the film with the most interpretations. It’s simply overflowing with symbolism and countless signs, ranging from the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland to hints of a Masonic conspiracy. Each of the theories of explanations of the deep meaning of the film requires a long analysis, we will write only one fact, which is the most mysterious in this picture: Neo’s passport. More precisely, its expiration date is September 11, 2001. Recall that the film was released in March 1999. Whether it is a coincidence or a conspiracy, we can only guess.

"Spider-Man" - puberty age

The reason Spider-Man is so popular is simple: each of us has experienced Peter Parker’s story, though not in such an exaggerated and theatrical way. The film features a dramatic "transformation" of a teenager - a metaphorical depiction of puberty. The hero notices physiological changes in himself. He is afraid of them, and his family is worried about his condition. He is not able to cope with the opportunities, but still this is a new stage that will fundamentally change his life.

The X-Men – Civil Rights Fight

In the first script of "X-Men", which was written in the 60s, the meaning of the film was invested in the fight for the civil rights of certain segments of society. In the two thousandth this problem became irrelevant, but the protection of the rights of sexual minorities came to the fore. After this version, slogans against mutants “We must save our children!”, phrases of the public “Mutants will soon become full members of our society” or questions “When did you first realize this?”

Groundhog Day – Achievement of Enlightenment

Recall the plot: the main character of the film lives the same day many times until he understands the meaning of everything that is happening and thereby opens this time loop. A bit like the philosophy of Buddhism: with each new day, as if with each new life, the hero gets closer to Enlightenment and eventually reaches it.

"Lord of the Rings" - the establishment of a totalitarian regime

The Lord of the Rings is an epic that also has an incredible number of interpretations. Someone sees this film as a direct reference to the First World War, someone connects it with the history of relations between Western and Eastern civilizations, many recall ancient myths about good and evil. But one of the most curious details is the all-seeing Eye of Sauron – the embodiment of absolute evil, which is located on top of the castle tower. Many draw a parallel with the Masonic eye sign in the pyramid, which, for example, can also be seen on a US one-dollar bill with the inscription “New World Order”. Or in the image of Big Brother from the famous "1984". In any case, this Eye represents the pinnacle of the control machine trying to create a global totalitarian order. An order based on violence and fear.

Toy Story 3 – The Holocaust

Many viewers see the third part of Toy Story as a clear reference to the Holocaust. Toys that have become unnecessary in the life of their adult owner should be sent to the attic. But by chance they end up in kindergarten. Among the toys, this garden is considered a real concentration camp in view of the totalitarian regime established by the local "Hitler" - Lotso bear. The heroes of our history represent the Jews who successfully left the camps. Some proponents of this theory also mention an allusion to Anne Frank, whose family tried to hide in the attic where the heroes were supposed to be sent first. Cartoon in front of the eyes turns into a serious job, right?

The Wizard of Oz – Populism

This good childhood tale is also not as simple as it seems at first glance. The Yellow Brick Road is a direct reference to the gold standard, the heroes are poor farmers, the Wizard is a dormant but promising power, and the Emerald City and its master fraudsters symbolize the deceptive value of green paper money. All this may seem quite far-fetched, but there are many allusions in the film, which are devoted to whole studies, leaving no doubt that this is not just a story about a homesick girl from a farm.

Game of Thrones: War of the Roses

The author of the book “A Song of Ice and Fire”, on which the film “Game of Thrones” was shot, confirms that he invented the saga, relying on the conflict of York and Lancaster in the XV century, which in the history of Britain is known as the “War of the Scarlet and White Roses”. During the Thirty Years War of the Roses, the English throne changed hands six times, and the rulers were willing to do anything to seal a successful marriage or get land. A parallel can also be drawn between many historical figures of the period and the characters of the series, as well as between the map of Westeros and the map of then Britain, also divided into seven parts.
