The train station which seeks to become "green"





Union station Washington D.C. is the second largest train station in the United States after new York's Penn Station and at the same time after 1907, when the station was built, its reconstruction was carried out. At the end of July, Amtrak announced very ambitious plans for the overhaul of the station: promise that after the reconstruction of Union Station Washington DC is not only high-tech but also environmentally friendly.





General plan of reconstruction of the railway station was designed by HOK in collaboration with Parsons Brinkerhoff, and, according to preliminary estimates, reconstruction will cost $ 6.5 billion, in addition to the reconstruction of the station assumes the construction of over 3 million sq m of new residential, commercial and public space along the railway tracks.





As it became known, the architectural appearance of the station will be saved, but received a number of upgrades in terms of efficiency and environmental performance. It is planned to increase traffic or to expand the bandwidth of the station of up to 300 thousand passengers a day and create such conditions that the passengers feel comfortable.





Project funding is not yet secured, but we know that the money will come from a variety of sources: from the railway Department, local and Federal authorities and also from private sponsors. The reconstruction will be carried out in three phases. Start of work will start in 2013 and ready for updated train station will be by 2028. And while the title of the most"green" railroad holds a High Line in Manhattan
