Green tram way in Manhattan
Until the 1980-ies branch overhead railway rattled the wheels of a freight train, but then it was no longer required and leading to the port pier is dilapidated, overgrown with weeds and covered with rust. Instead of trying to get rid of the railway, new York turned it into an eco-trail – the High Line Park. Since this place has gained impressive popularity, urban governance reflect on the creation of a special tram line.
Many people had a hand in the creation of new green spaces – architects and landscape designers from the "James Corner field operations" and "Diller Scofidio + Renfro", government officials, investors and volunteers.
For three years they were able to truly reclaim old industrial line with trees, shrubs, flowers and herbs. Starting construction work in 2006, to June 2009, new York was able to open the High Line Park for the first visitors.
Green ribbon with a magical view of the Hudson and new Jersey takes you past many art galleries in the old Chelsea district, which over the last twenty years had turned into a center for contemporary art, and from time to time it dives into the arches of buildings.
In the High Line Park you can stroll along the wooden boardwalks, relax and soak up the sun on the benches and stove, watch, or even participate in concerts and other events, for which it has multiple small scenes.
In the High Line Park has a developed infrastructure — drinking fountains, toilets, and most importantly – special lifts throughout the Park that are designed specifically for senior citizens and people with disabilities.
Thus High Line Park has become a very popular urban facility for local residents and visitors the "Big Apple".
Here you can meet people from all over the city who walk, examine the various art installations, watching the rehearsals of theatre companies, or working with artists to celebrate the engagement, going on a picnic, read books... Or just those who need to rapidly cross walk to the city centre.
It is not surprising that the city administration was visited by the idea slightly to "unload" the Park from pedestrians using the tram line. It will be held throughout the length of the High Line Park and will include several stops with output in the green area and the churning anxiety of new York streets.
But, despite the fact that the overpass is still preserved railway rails, the idea is to use a regular tram immediately refused – not least because it would create unimaginable rattling, moving on the concrete structure. So the choice fell on the idea of magnetic levitation.
Such high technology has its indisputable advantages. First, Maglev trains have relatively low energy consumption: it is consumed at three and five times more efficient than automobile and airplane, respectively. Second, the advantage of such a vehicle in a low noise level that will certainly appreciate the campers that come here just to relax from the hustle and bustle and become one step closer to nature.
Although it should be noted and controversial points: for example, the cost of creation and maintenance of one kilometer of the magnetic track is comparable to the construction of a kilometre of underground subway tunnel. But, anyway, speaking of the ultra-modern tram line to High Line Park, we are dealing not just with an interesting eco-friendly concept, convenient and high-speed the likes of which will sooner or later be embodied in many cities around the world.
