Eco-friendly house out of plastic Butylek
Enterprising residents of the Nigerian city of Kaduna has found an original method of solving two common problems of their homeland – lack of housing and the fabulous amount of plastic bags. And this will help them in... plastic bottles!
The project was organized by non-governmental environmental organization of the city of Kaduna "Association for the development of renewable energy (Development Association for Renewable Energies). Scientific support was provided by foreign experts of the African Public Fund, a non-governmental organization based in London.
At first glance, the idea to gather up on the sides of roads, channels and drainage ditches tons of plastic bottles and to settle people in them! — looks weird. However, it is this going to have enthusiasts.
At the moment the construction of the first prototype building on the outskirts of the village jelva the Sabon (Sabon Yelwa) is in full swing. By the end of the initiative group hopes to expand the activities and to fully realize its outdoor "bottle capacity". Proponents of the project propose the doubters though the stones in the structure to drop, testing the strength of: the house is built for the ages.
"This is the first in Africa, the house, built of bottles and can play an important role in solving the housing problems of Nigeria, and in the purification of strongly polluted environment", — concluded the project initiator Christopher Vasiliu (Christopher Vassiliu) during a visit to the unique home yet.
Standing in the middle of a vast irrigated farm house consists of a circular living room, connected with the indoor space by a short hallway. On one side are two bedrooms with the bathroom in the middle, opposite the bathroom. A side door leads to the outdoor courtyard and kitchen.
"An additional advantage of this structure is that it is fireproof, bullet proof and earthquake resistant, and the inside is kept at a constant temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, which for the tropical climate very well", — says the project coordinator Yahaya Ahmad (Ahmad Yahaya).
According to Ahmad, provided the correct positioning of the supporting columns of the floors "bottle" of the building can be increased, but not more than three floors, further growth is hampered by the weight of the sand-filled bottles.
In addition to the environmental friendliness of building materials, the building promises to be carbon-neutral, since the electricity supply will be provided by solar panels and methane gas derived from household waste and animal waste.
On completion the building will be used for learning construction of such structures of new generations of masons. While the building finished at 70%. According to preliminary estimates, only for its construction will take 14 thousand bottles, which is good, considering the large number of such garbage is regularly sent to landfill sites from the local hotels, embassies and restaurants.
Environmentalists estimate that the daily "harvest" of empty plastic bottles in Nigeria is 160 million units. In this case, one of the most densely populated countries in Africa there is an acute shortage of housing. According to the State mortgage Bank of Nigeria, people need to build 16 million housing units, according to conservative estimates drawn in the amount of 45 trillion Naira ($300 million).
"Plastic houses much cheaper – their construction is fairly ordinary quarter for the construction of a residential house of the amount," — says Christopher Vassiliou, a Greek by nationality, 30 years of experience in Nigeria engineer hydraulic engineer.
According to him, the cost of the current project will be 2 million Naira ($12,700).
