Using an electronic tablet to improve reading technique

Volunteers were asked to read the same text on the iPad 2, the e-book without a backlight and a conventional book. The researchers then calculated the time it took subjects to read the text.

The result: with regular books the participants read at a speed of 187 words per minute, with e-book — 196 words per minute, and the iPad 2 — 224 words per minute. Especially those who suffer from myopia, appreciate the advantages of a tablet and more clearly seen in this text.

"A strong contrast between text and background on the tablet makes it more readable, especially for people with low vision," says lead researcher Daniel Rose.
