Started the excavation of one of the first Nazi concentration camps
Berlin Tempelhof airport is famous primarily due to the fact that thanks to him, Britain and the United States did not give the inhabitants of West Berlin to die from hunger and cold during the Soviet blockade that began in 1948 and lasted about a year. And ten years before that, there was a butchers a little different level: on-site Tempelhof was one of the first concentration camps of Nazi Germany.
Wife Susan Pollock and Reinhard Bernbeck opened excavations at the site of camp Colombia this year. Early archaeologists worked in the middle East and Turkey, but 2 years ago got professorships at the Free University of Berlin and then at a conference they were told about the history Tempelhof. Digging started immediately, as in the next decade there will be all built up.
The Nazis have taken from the military prison camp right in 1933. First there kept prisoners and workers for forced labor in the Lufthаnsa airline and aircraft manufacturer Wеserflug. Colombia can be called the training center, where the Nazis devised and implemented new methods of torture that were later used in concentration camps all over Europe. In 1936, the camp was considered too small and was closed.
