In Russia allowed to grow GMOs

The first domestic GMO products will be sold in two to three years. Now in Russia officially GMOs can be grown only on experimental sites, allowed the import of certain types of corn, potatoes, soybeans, rice and sugar beet. But several interlocutors of Vedomosti say that vertically integrated agroholdings have been actively dotting their fields with feed GMOs before, it just wasn’t advertised. Foods with the addition of GMOs in Russia are allowed, but are subject to labeling.

However, in Russia, 14 regions were classified as GMO-free zones, including Moscow, St. Petersburg and the Belgorod region. It is because of this that Efko is in no hurry with GMOs, which owns one of the country’s largest soybean processing plants. The main consumers of our soybean meal are meat enterprises of the Belgorod region, a zone that is free of GMOs. If the policy of the region changes, then we may switch to seeds of GMO soybeans, commented Efko CEO Yevgeny Lyashenko.

Registration of terrible GMOs will be dealt with by several agencies: the Ministry of Health – those used for the preparation of medicines, Roszdravnadzor – medicines, Rospotrebnadzor – food, Rosselkhoznadzor – animal feed. In addition, the Ministry of Health will maintain a kind of register of GMOs and products obtained with their use.
