Scientists have found a new explanation of banding zebras

Bright stripes on Zebra skins need these animals to conceal their movements and protect themselves from predators, according to scientists from the University of Queensland (Australia).
Previously, experts have put forward several theories, which related to the stripes of zebras. For example, in 2012, scientists from Sweden and Hungary experimentally found that a narrow strip making the animals extremely "unattractive" to the flies and gadflies, but now Australian scientists have found another explanation.

As the author says, works by Martin How, computer simulations shows that when the zebras this coloration creates an optical illusion that is a kind of protection from predators such as cheetahs and lions. Moreover, the coloration is confusing, and some small insects.

As examples of such optical illusions can result in the rotation of the pole painted on it with the spiral: people think that this spiral is moving up or down. The rotation of the propeller, too, is another analogue of this illusion: upon reaching a certain speed, it begins to seem that the direction of rotation is reversed.
